Johnson announced in a interview a while back that he had retired the
project, but recently has activated the project for some live
concerts. In the 80s his output was an album roughly every 4 years.
Initially they were on 4AD but then moved to a some bizarre and onto
better distribution. My starting point with The The was the
'Infected' video EP. Which was a film of every track on the album,
unheard of at the time. Then the 'Mind bomb' album which featured
Johnny Marr. It wasn't until later I went back into the discography
and found 'Soul Mining' the album is very direct lyric wise, cynical,
observer, hopeful. I suppose if Ian Curtis was the bleak lyrical
genuis, then Matt Johnson was more like a cynical and insightful
lyrist.The album has a past, present and future outlook. 'This is the
day' and 'I've been waiting (for tomorrow all of my life). This
track features Jools Holland on Piano, the track and album is The The
